Dr. Su Min Chou was born on November 11, 1930 in Suzhou in the Jiangsu province of China to Mr. and Mrs. Huai Chih Chou.  His father was a businessman and his mother was a homemaker.  He escaped from China in 1949 and moved to Taiwan.  He graduated from high school in Taichung, Taiwan in 1950.  He received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Chinese Naval College of Technology in Tsoying, Taiwan in 1954 and and served as a Major in the Taiwanese Navy from 1954-1959.  He then obtained his masters degree from National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1961.  After receiving his masters degree, Dr. Chou obtained a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Utah in 1968.  At the University of Utah, he met his wife of over 40 years — Dr. Janice Chou — whom he married in March of 1966.

Following his graduation from the University of Utah, Dr. Chou moved to Silver Springs, Maryland where he joined Comsat Laboratories as a microwave engineer.  At Comsat Laboratories, he was a member of the technical staff and worked on vacuum tube amplifiers.  His wife joined him six months later when she landed a job at the National Institutes of Health as a visiting fellow.  In 1969, they had their first child, Danny Yeh Chou. Two years later, they bought their first home in Potomac, Maryland where they lived for 34 years.  In 1975, they had their second child, Stephen Wei Chou. Dr. Chou retired from Comsat Laboratories in 1988.  He joined AEPCO a few years later as a senior manager and retired in 1998.

Throughout his life, Dr. Chou was active in the Chinese-American community.  He was the President of the Chinese Students Association at the University of Utah.  After he moved to Maryland, he became one of the original founders of the Potomac Chinese School and served on its Board of Directors for several years.  During that time, Dr. Chou was, among other things, instrumental in raising money for the school and selecting and hiring its teachers.  In 1982, he and four others established the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center, Inc. (CCACC).  For four years, Dr. Chou served as the Vice President of the CCACC.  After stepping down from the Board, he continued to assist the CCACC as a volunteer. He was also the Vice-Chair for the CCACC Federal Credit Union and served on the Board of Directors for two three-year terms.

In addition to his work and his activities on behalf of the Chinese-American community, Dr. Chou had many hobbies — which he actively pursued during his retirement.  He loved to play tennis and bridge.  He played tennis regularly until he was 75 and played bridge every other week since his retirement.  He also loved Chinese opera and spent many enjoyable hours watching his hundred plus videos.  Dr. Chou was an avid photographer who fully embraced the digital revolution and became an expert in Photoshop.  He and his wife also loved to travel.  They went on their first cruise to Alaska in 1994 and became hooked ever since.  Over the years, they took cruises to the Middle East, the Amazon, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, the Caribbean, Russia, and the British Isles.
